Pocklington's past...
In 1733 Pocklington played host to Thomas Pelling a travelling salesman from Lincolnshire. Nick named 'The Flying Man', Pelling was tragically killed when attempting to 'fly' between the church steeple and Starr Inn pub. Unfortunately the men in charge of rope at the Inn let the rope go and Thomas (dressed as a bat) fatally crashed into the side of the church. A plaque at the side of the church still exists today to commemorate the event and each year an anniversary takes place within the town.
